A 3-star city hotel and a 5-star resort should not buy the same bed linen. The right specification follows the guests’ expectations, the room rate and the laundry programme, not the highest thread count on a price list.

The whole bed

At 3-star level, guests notice crisp, clean and well-pressed sheets rather than a number on a label. A durable percale of around 180–200 thread count in long-staple cotton, chosen for how it survives washing, usually serves better than a “premium” sheet that wears out sooner.

At 4-star level, guests expect a softer hand and a fuller-looking bed. A sateen or percale of around 250 thread count with a mid-weight duvet usually meets that expectation without paying for gains guests will not feel.

At 5-star and resort properties, guests judge the whole bed rather than the sheet alone: a sateen finish, a choice of duvet weights and a decorative layer all shape the made bed they remember and photograph.

At every level, three things matter more than the label: the quality and staple length of the cotton, the weave (percale for a crisp finish, sateen for a softer drape) and whether the fabric holds up in the hotel’s own commercial laundry. That is why a specification is best checked on a sample, washed in that laundry, before a bulk order.
